Just a quick post today, as I've got class this afternoon and I want to hit the market beforehand. This is my first TGKA conference and it's much smaller than Stitches (we'll see what market is like), but I truely enjoyed my class with Melissa Leapman yesterday. This is the second class I've taken with her and I think she's an excellent teacher (clear, funny and informative). It was actually a very useful class for me, as she covered different color techniques in crochet (I have an intarsia afghan that I've been wanting to make, but was struggling on how to make it). I think I was the only "knitter" in the class. I even overheard someone make a derogatory comment about knitting... I don't get this. Why do knitters and crocheters feel obligated to compete which is better? One is NOT better than the other. Granted, I prefer knitted sweaters and crochet afghans, but why do we feel the need to act that our preffered hobby is better than someone else's? I guess it helps to boost the confidence of people with low self esteem. Otherwise, why would you even care. Anyway, apart from the snob and the power outage (yes the area around the Valley Forge Convention Center got a major power outage: and the convention center does not have good emergency lighting), it was a great day. Let's see how much money I can spend at market today...

Ooops, I screwed up again. I decided to use wooden toggle style buttons on the Cross Over Top, but didn't think about the buttonholes... so I've got to fix yet an other problem with my knitting. Instead of a knitting blog, this is more of a knitting bodge... Anyway, the solution is actually quite simple. I'm going to sew the buttons on the front and use snaps to actually close the vest. Here's what it's going to look like once I sew on the buttons and snaps:

The top is a little too cropped/open for me to wear without something underneath it. So I'll be using it as a vest rather than a top. All in all, not a terrible project. It was simple to knit and the yarn was a delight to work with, but I'm not sure how "me" the finished project is. We'll see... might just need to wear it a bit before I pass final judgement. In other knitting news: I've picked up the back for the Spring Forward Cardigan. I'm glad I changed yarn. It's going to look the same (similar shade of pink), but the cotton/acrylic blend is actually much easier on the hands to knit. Now if I only can only stop making mistakes...

The Cross Over Top will be finished today. I found some buttons that I really like for it. All I need to do is finish the right front button band and weave in the rest of the ends and it's done. The only other thing I've been doing is making my swatches for the classes I'm taking at the TGKA conference this weekend. I have classes on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I'm going to avoid the market (I'll go thru one day) as I noticed that I actually bought a lot of yarn this month. Speaking of buying yarn (which we know is my "actual" hobby-not knitting), Tori sent me a lovely gift certificate from Elann as a thank you for some yarn I sent her. So I did a little shopping at Elann yesterday. I'll show you what I got when it comes! Yarn gift certificates are so much fun! I feel like I can splurge and I spend a lot of time debating what I want to use it for! So thanks so much Tori! It definitely wasn't necesassry, but I had a lot of fun shopping! I have a gift certificate for Halcyon that I got for Christmas. This one has been hard to settle on what I want to use it for. So many choices... so many projects that I want to do... I also have to say that I no longer have any qualms about shopping online compared to buying local. One of my pet peeves is sales tax. Yarn should not have sales tax in the state of Pennsylvania, yet the last 3 times I've bought yarn, I've been charged sales tax on it. (Clothing is not a taxable item in PA). I guess it's now considered a hobby, instead of "clothing". I also was charged sales tax the last time I bought fabric by the yarn (also should not have sales tax in PA). Basically because I want to make my clothes rather than buy them off the rack, I have to pay sales tax. Well, I guess it's not all just "made" clothing, as the last sports bra I bought had sales tax on it as well. Yes, I know it's being picky, but I don't want to pay more than I have to for stuff. Okay, I'm done venting. Well, I guess I should finish up the Cross Over Top so I can get a picture of it....
