Knit Alongs

Starting TBD
If it's raining, it must mean that Matt's got a race. Heehee. I swear he only races when it rains.

Anyway, a Friday race is rare, but this one is special. This is a pre-event for the
US Pro Cycling Championship. This is the biggest cycling race in the US, held annually in Philadelphia. The top finishing US rider becomes the US Champion. The race includes a nasty little climb that the pro's will go up 10 times during the 153 mile race. Known as "The Wall" in Manayunk, it's a short climb of 1 km, but it's about a 17% grade. Tonight is the amateur climb. They only do The Wall (I guess they don't want to shut the city down until Sunday) and they do it as a time trial (each rider goes one at a time, best time wins, rather than as a pack... so no inexperienced riders to knock Matt down this time). I should be going (we'll see how the weather stays... I'm not sure I'm dedicated enough to stand in the rain to watch him climb a hill).

For those interested in what riding a 17% grade on a bike is like,
here's a cool article.

So I'll take some knitting, sit on the curb in Manayunk, and wait for Matt to ride up a hill in less than 2 minutes. (the cat 5 rider winning time last year was about 1m 18 secs).

So that's the plan for today. I'll work a bit on the Cropped Cardigan Redux and fiddle around with some other projects. I started a crochet cardigan yesterday and I'm very pleased with how it's looking. I'll have pictures of it soon!

Retired KAL's
I'm completely addicted to this alpaca yarn.
Thanks to Matt at
Crowing Ram
for the button.
As you can see from yesterday's picture, I'm having some problems getting a decent picture of the sweater. Sadly you also can't see the beautiful halo the yarn gives this sweater. So anyway, the back and left front is done (I blocked the left front to see if it was going to be large enough).

I knew when I started this it was going to be a fast knit. The back took a little while to knit since it's nothing but moss stitch, so I could only work on it for short periods of time before I got bored, but with the fronts and sleeves having cables, it's flying off my needles. It doesn't hurt that it's only 17" long.

I was passed the music baton from
Sarah:

Music files on my computer:
13.7GB, or 5,132 files (yikes!)... but then we've downloaded every CD we've ever bought since the late 80's....

The last CD I bought:

My Chemical Romance "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge"... actually ordered this on Saturday and it should be here today.

Song playing right now:
Linkin Park (no relation) "Lying from You", however it just switched to Chevelle's "The Clincher"

Five songs I listen to a lot or mean a lot to me:
Well, I'm cheating on this. I don't think of music too often in terms of "songs" but more like albums. (have you heard Pink Floyd's "best of"? it was weird and completely unlistenable. Their music is album based)

Peter Gabriel
So: One of the most beautiful albums ever created. 20 years later (yikes!) it is still a moving and enjoyable album. I've probably listened to this more times than any album in my collection.

Live
Mental Jewelry: I rarely make a playlist without this album included. When I think how old this band was at the time they made this album (18-19 years old), I'm blown away by the beauty and depth of the lyrics and music.

U2
The Joshua Tree: not my very favorite U2 album (that would be The Unforgettable Fire), but the most significant as Matt and I spent a lot of time listening to this when we first started dating. It always reminds me of that time in our relationship.

The Barenaked Ladies
Gorden: Actually, any BNL ballad can be placed here, but I really enjoy Gorden. I find their lyrics to be clever and funny. The problem is that I spent a period of time of listening to nothing but BNL and sort of burned myself out.

Linkin Park "Hybrid Theory": A completely listenable album that just doesn't get old for me. A great mix of styles that completely works. An other album that almost always gets included on a playlist.

I'm supposed to pass this on, but I know this one has been around for a bit... anyone who hasn't done it and would like to do it, let me know and I'll pass ya the baton...

Alpaca is the crack of yarn. Once you start knitting with it, you can't stop.
I finished up the back yesterday for the Cropped Cardigan Redux so I thought I would just cast on the front. Uh hu. I can't freaking put it down. I did change the big cable filler from reverse stockinette stitch to moss. This is going to be one beautiful sweater. Must check my funds to see if I can buy more of this yarn before it's all gone. It is yummmmmmy.

However, I didn't neglect my much beloved Spring Forward either. The back is to the armholes and I have the left front started (all the neck increases are finished).
So lots of cables being done. In a bunch of different types of yarn. That's what makes knitting so much fun!!!!

I thought I was going to have lots of knitting time yesterday, but best laid plans and all that. So I didn't get to the armhole on the back of the Spring Forward Cardigan. No reason I can't today (it's only like 1" to go or so...).

I worked a bit on the Cropped Cardigan Redux yesterday, too. Since the back is solid moss stitch, it's a nice break from all the heavily cabled projects that I'm working on right now.

It did make me think a lot about my current projects and the ones waiting in the wings. I love cardigans. I prefer knitting pullovers, but when push comes to shove, I really prefer wearing cardigans. I'm making Marilyn (which I've put aside for the summer... or at least for now). I'm currently working on the Cropped Cardigan Redux and of course the Spring Forward. I'm planning on a "Fall Back" version in a wool (probably Ballybrae or Black Water Abbey) and I'm planning on a Must Have Caridigan. Wow! That's a lot of cardigans! But can a girl really have too many cardigans? Really?

I already know that my Fall Back version of the Spring Forward will be cropped and zippered (so it will be a completely different cardigan... right?)

Well, planning is the fun part, but I've got to get back to the needles if I'm going to get any of these done....

Here's what happens when I become obsessed with a pattern:
I don't know exactly how many yarns I've played with to make the Spring Forward. The large piece in the background was the Cascade Sierra that I had started with. I got a pretty good chunk of the sweater done (I was halfway thru the first sleeve) when I realized that I was making too large a size and I wasn't happy working with the yarn. So I played with some other yarns. I still plan on making a wool one (probably in Ballybrae). Anyway, I've restarted it in Cotton Plus (I still want a pink cardigan) and I'm very happy so far.
This is actually the second attempt with the Cotton Plus, too. My first attempt the gauge was a little too loose, but this one seems to be working well. The pattern is perfect. I love the cables and I'm thinking this yarn is going to make a very comfy cardigan.

Anyone who would like to join me in knitting this, I've started a Knit Along. Just pop over to the page and leave a tag.
Today is a holiday without much obligations, so I'm hoping I can get the back of the Spring Forward to the armhole depth.
